Introduction, continued...

Farnham has suffered from poor planning decisions in recent years.

WoolmeadRecent years have been less sympathetic to some of the town’s cultural aspects. In the 1960s A dozen of the town’s historical buildings were levelled and replaced by a characterless development, the Woolmead.

Demolished cinema

In 1985 the town’s only cinema, a prized Art Deco building, was bulldozed in mysterious circumstances and its site allowed to remain an ugly piece of waste ground in the heart of the town.

Brightwells derelict

Later that decade an inexperienced artistic director, together with the theatre's board of directors, changed the Redgrave's productions policy. Following some disastrous decision-making the Redgrave Theatre was eventually closed by the local council, Waverley, as it was losing too much money. The beautiful 18th century house, Brightwell, which formed part of the theatre’s premises became all-but derelict and has had to be boarded up with stout metal sheets to protect it from vandalism.

Now, as the Council negotiates the controversial East Street redevelopment scheme, which includes Brightwell House and the Redgrave, the future of the theatre looks very uncertain.

This website is devoted to preserving the Redgrave Theatre and to re-establishing professional repertory theatre in Farnham.
